L’Origine des espèces
Did an almighty God create the world or was it formed and developed gradually through evolution? The tension that still exists today between the theory of evolution and the belief in a creator is not something that the Greek-French composer Georges Aperghis attempts to resolve. Rather, he approaches the work with imagination. Together with the librettist François Régnaud, he takes Charles Darwin's famous and long controversial text on the origin of species and combines it with ritualistic, even ecstatic music, thus pointing to humanity's deeply rooted needs for repetition and devotion.
